İmam Hatip schools were established in 1924 for the training of imam s (Islamic religious leaders) and hatip s (preachers), when the centuries-old Ottoman medrese system was closed and a secular republican educational system was established with the Law of Unified Education (Tevhid-i Tedrisat Kanunu).
