Sean Mathias directed this screen adaptation of Martin Sherman's award-winning play about the persecution of homosexuals by Nazis during World War II. In Germany, the Nazi party's program of genocide against any and all perceived "enemies" comes into full swing when the party begins a violent purge of homosexuals in its membership.

Sean Mathias had been influential in persuading Ian McKellen to accept the role in the original stage version of the play in 1979. Ten years later, Sherman and McKellen staged a single performance of the play in aid of The Stonewall Group, an organisation that aims to establish equality for lesbians and gay men in the UK.
