Sir Shridath Surendranath Ramphal GCMG AC ONZ OE OCC KC FRSA OM (born 3 October 1928), often known as Sir Sonny Ramphal, is a Guyanese politician who was the second Commonwealth Secretary-General, holding the position from 1975 to 1990.
The Shridath Ramphal Centre is the premier Caribbean trade policy training, research, and outreach institution with a mandate to assist Caribbean countries with transforming their economies. As such, the work done by the Centre has largely focused on the growth and development of CARICOM.
Sir Shridath Ramphal, former Secretary-General of the British Commonwealth, is Co-Chair of the Commission on Global Governance, President of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and Chair of the International Steering Committee of the Rockefeller Foundation's Leadership in Environmental and Development (LEAD) Programme.
Sir Shridath is a Guyanese national who has served as the Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (1989-2003), Commonwealth Secretary General (1975-1990), Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guyana (1972-1975), and Assistant Attorney General of the British West Indies Federation (1958-1962).
Sir Shridath, as he is known to many, was a Cabinet Minister in the Guyana Government and served as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth for fifteen years. As Chairman of the West Indian Commission, he functioned as draughtsman for the reconstruction and development of Caribbean society.
Shridath ‘Sonny’ Ramphal was born in 1928 in New Amsterdam, British Guiana, to an Indo-Guyanese family. Having been educated at King’s College London, and later at Harvard Law School, Ramphal went on to live a decidedly ‘global’ life.
