Silliman is the largest college at Yale in terms of area, occupying most of a city block. Whereas other colleges house their first-year students on Old Campus, first years in Silliman College and Timothy Dwight College (our rival) enjoy the privilege of living in their own colleges!
Silliman College is a residential college at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, named for scientist and Yale professor Benjamin Silliman. It opened in September 1940 as the last of the original ten residential colleges, and contains buildings constructed as early as 1901.

In 1852, Silliman was instrumental in the founding of the Yale School of Engineering, a pioneering event in professional scientific education in the United States. To honor such a towering figure in the history of science at Yale and in America, our college was named after Benjamin Silliman.
The college was named after Benjamin Silliman (1779-1864), the father of American scientific education. Silliman was the first professor of Chemistry at Yale. Apart from going on to found the Yale Medical School in 1813, as well as the Peabody Museum and the Yale Art Gallery , he in 1818, he founded American Journal of Science ; a scientific periodical still published in New Haven today.

21 ago 2017 · Bill Silliman was raised on his father's farm at York, North Dakota and attended Leeds High School. His first camera was a Kodak Brownie when he was in high school. Growing up in an area where there was lots of wildlife including white tail deer, ducks, geese and whooping cranes that flew over the farm, he has always been interested in the outdoors.
