Federico Cristiano era il più giovane dei quattordici figli di Cristiano Enrico di Brandeburgo-Kulmbach e della moglie Sofia Cristiana di Wolfstein. Succedette al nipote Federico morto senza eredi; apparteneva alla linea degli Hohenzollern di Franconia detta Brandeburgo-Kulmbach.

Sofia era figlia del Margravio Cristiano Enrico di Brandeburgo-Kulmbach e di sua moglie, la Contessa Sofia Cristiana di Wolfstein. L'8 dicembre 1723 sposò, nel Castello di Pretzsch, il Principe Giorgio Alberto di Ostfriesland (1690–1734), divenendone la seconda moglie, ottenendo dal marito in vitalizio Burg Berum.
