The Southern Pacific was the final unit in UP's Heritage Series of locomotives, and was inspired by the railroad's famous "Daylight" trains, often referred to as "The Most Beautiful Trains in the World." Founded in 1865 by a group of businessmen in San Francisco, the Southern Pacific was created as a rail line from San Francisco to San Diego.

The Southern Pacific Railroad, also known as SP, was a historic American railroad that operated from 1865 to 1996. The railroad was originally created to provide a rail link between San Francisco and San Diego, but it grew to become a major transportation network connecting the entire western United States.
The Southern Pacific Transportation Company was acquired in 1996 by the Union Pacific Corporation and merged with their Union Pacific Railroad. The Southern Pacific legacy founded hospitals in San Francisco, Tucson, and Houston. In the 1970s, it also founded a telecommunications network with a state-of-the-art microwave and fiber optic backbone.
