1 mar 2024 · The Masita Post-Primary Schools Croke Cup reaches the semi-finals this weekend and old rivals St Kieran’s College and Ardscoil Ris face off on Saturday for a place in the decider. Following an All-Ireland final defeat to the Limerick school in 2022, the Kilkenny team will be hoping to gain retribution and move one-step closer towards the heralded title.
The Junior Cycle is of three years duration. Pupils take a broad range of subjects in First Year, most but not all of which are taken to the end of Third Year. St Kieran’s College is a diocesan Catholic secondary school under the patronage of the Bishop of Ossory. St Kieran of Saighir is said to have preached the Gospel in Ireland before St Patrick. The College was established in 1782, ‘the first Catholic College in the Kingdom’ to open its doors after Grattan’s Parliament had relaxed the Penal Laws in the same year.
