Stephen Lawrence Schwartz (born March 6, 1948) is an American musical theatre composer and lyricist. In a career spanning over five decades, Schwartz has written such hit musicals as Godspell (1971), Pippin (1972), and Wicked (2003).

He has contributed lyrics for a number of successful films, including POCAHONTAS, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, and ENCHANTED.
Stephen Schwartz was born in New York City on March 6, 1948. He studied piano and composition at the Juilliard School of Music while in high school and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1968 with a B.F.A. in Drama.
