The attack was carried out by members of the new religious movement AUM Shinrikyo (since 2000 called Aleph) and killed 13 people and injured more than 5,000.

Asahara and members of his sect were found guilty of carrying out a 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system that killed 13 people and injured some 5,500. He was executed in 2018.
