Sydney Dickens, c. 1860. Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens (18 April 1847 – 2 May 1872) was a Royal Navy officer, the fifth son and seventh child of English novelist Charles Dickens and his wife Catherine.

Despite being one of Dickens' favorite children, his father sent him to boarding school in France at an early age with his older brothers Alfred and Harry.

5 lug 2012 · Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens (1847-1872) – Charles Dickens was very proud of Sydney’s naval career. However later he was very displeased about Sydney’s financial troubles. Sydney passed away when he was only twenty five. He died while trying to return home for sick leave.
Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens, the son of Charles Dickens and Catherine Hogarth Dickens, was born on 18th April, 1847. It was an exceptionally painful labour and was probably a breech delivery. Between 1844 and 1847 she gave birth to three sons, none of them desired by Dickens, although he warmed to each of them during their baby years.
