He came to prominence with his comic play The Anatomist (1931), about the grave robbers Burke and Hare. This and other comedic plays saw success in London, and he became a full-time writer in 1938. He returned to the army during World War II , again serving as a physician.

13 apr 2020 · Film review – The Anatomist (1956) ‘Everybody knows he’s hand-in-glove with the sack-em-up men!’. An early TV movie, shot under the aegis of the busy Harry Alan Towers, adapted (minimally) by director Dennis Vance from James Bridie’s play about Dr Knox, the patron of Burke and Hare.
Dr. Knox is a brilliant anatomist and he needs dead bodies to work on, whatever the law says. Burke and Hare can provide them. We don't have any crew added to this movie.
