Elia Kazan's "The Arrangement" is one of those long, ponderous, star-filled "serious" films that were popular in the 1950s, before we began to value style more highly than the director's good intentions. It isn't successful, particularly not on Kazan's terms (he sees it, doubtless, as a bitter sermon on the consequences of selling out).
The Arrangement (1969) is first and foremost a vanity project, for director Elia Kazan, who wrote the novel the film is based on, which in turn was based to some degree or another on his own pampered life in Beverly Hills, his own male-menopause breakdown, and his own specific feelings about then-contemporary pop culture.
Critics reviews. A young model doesn’t mind her architect father having an affair with his secretary, but when he announces that he’s going to marry the family maid—who he has also been having an affair with—his daughter decides to put her foot down and gathers some of her friends to help prevent the marriage.
