Visioni e ri-visioni (sullo schermo, nei passaggi tv, in home video) non ne scallfiscono l’autenticità, l’emozione assoluta, lo stordimento provocato da quelle immagini la prima volta. Un film tutto ancora nella memoria, cresciuto senza chiedere spazio e importunare.
A Victorian surgeon rescues a heavily disfigured man being mistreated by his "owner" as a side-show freak. Behind his monstrous façade, there is revealed a person of great intelligence and sensitivity. Based on the true story of Joseph Merrick (called John Merrick in the film), a severely deformed man in 19th century London. David Lynch.
Il miracolo, è, a mio avviso, avvenuto, e consiste in primo luogo nel fare accettare al pubblico il viso, quel che pare un viso, dell'"elephant man". Pensavo, prima di vederlo, che il mostro sarebbe sempre apparso ammantellato, con la triste fessura nera nel cappuccio al posto dell'occhio, come si vedeva negli annunci pubblicitari, e che solo per brevissimi momenti si sarebbe scoperto.
