is the fourth film in the Hornblower TV series. It is loosely based on part of Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, and first aired in 1999.

The Baron de Charette, a royalist general, raised a force of French exiles and hoped to restore the French monarchy, believing that the countryside needed only a rallying point to join him. He was supported by the British government, who provided Royal Navy vessels to ferry a combined expeditionary force of French royalist troops and a demi-battalion of British infantry across the English Channel to France. Doomed from the outset, a copy of the orders were stolen in London before they even set sail. Captain Pellew, requested that the operation be called off, but his request was denied and they sailed off for disaster. Hornblower and Kennedy were assigned to hold and, if necessary, blow up the bridge at Muzillac. The French officer in charge of the royalist forces accompanying him was the local aristocracy prior to the revolution. He packed his own small guillotine and used it liberally on his former vassals. The French revolutionary forces attack, rout the royalists and execute their leader using the same guillotine. Hornblower and his small detachment manage to reach the British troops, who conducted a disciplined retreat and reached their ships.

In a departure from the original story, a French peasant girl, Mariette, was introduced. Fluent in English, she and Hornblower form an attachment, but she is killed by French revolutionary troops while accompanying Hornblower back to his troops.
