The film is set during the 1972 World Championships in Slovakia, where the filmmaker plays a sarcastic and ironic journalist, proving through this stance that the actual challenge lies elsewhere. Steiner’s discipline is cleverly brought to its artistic dimension, thus put on the same level as his sculptures of wood figurines, which are just as aerial.

Herzog dehnt durch seinen filmischen Prozess die Zeitlichkeit des Fluges aus und macht die Zeitlupe zur Zeugin der Gestenschönheit, ohne das Motiv Absturz zu vernachlässigen, der für dieses nie erfüllte Ziel wesentlich ist.
“The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner” is Werner Herzog´s documentary about Walter Steiner, a celebrated and immensely talented Swiss ski jumper/flyer. It´s also one of Herzog´s earliest documentaries, in which he appears himself in front of the camera, and it´s interesting to see him before he fully developed his trademark persona.
