Film začíná v současnosti, ale po úvodu se ocitáme ve vizuálně příjemném 19. století. To beru jako plus. Zajímavé jsou inscenované smrti, kdy u gilotiny člověk tak nějak tuší. Závěr je jako vydařená pomsta, Hugo se ale nakonec rozhoduje jinak. Celkově film vypadá jako z poloviny 60. let.
