27 set 2002 · Immortal Battalion (1944), released in the United Kingdom as The Way Ahead, was borne out of a forty-four minute short produced for the British Army on the nature of military life called The New Lot. British filmmaker Carol Reed was tapped by the Army to direct the film with the full cooperation of the Army and the Department of Army Psychology.
6 apr 2024 · Beginning as a British Army training film called “The New lot”, this film was then expanded into a feature length film written by Eric Ambler and Peter Ustinov, entitled “The Way ahead” for its British audience and re-edited into a slightly shorter film entitled “The Immortal battalion” for an American audience.
The Immortal Battalion has a bit of a convoluted history. It started life as a training film, The New Lot, which ran 44 minutes. When Winston Churchill approached David Niven about creating a film that would do for the British Army what In Which We Serve had done for the Royal Navy, he contacted Carol Reed and suggested expanding The New Lot.
