Born and raised in Lafayette, Indiana, Axl Rose moved to Los Angeles, California in the early 1980s with his friend Jeffrey Isbell (Izzy Stradlin). This is where he became active in the local hard rock scene and joined several bands, including Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns.
Axl ha sempre puntato sull’antagonismo nei confronti di Sixx e Neil e, secondo me, anche a buon diritto. Pur essendo apparso dopo, è stato lui con l’orda Hollywood Rose / L.A. Guns, a dare vita alla scena sleaze in senso stretto. La sua voce è giovane e sembra un motosega da film splatter.

Prima di fondare i Guns N' Roses, Axl, assieme a Tracii Guns, fondò nel 1983 gli L.A. Guns. Successivamente Axl lasciò il gruppo per entrare negli Hollywood Rose. Tempo dopo gli Hollywood Rose si fusero con gli L.A. Guns (che poi si riformeranno), dando quindi il nome Guns N' Roses, che comprendeva
Axl, Slash e Duff McKagan fecero causa all'etichetta per impedire la pubblicazione dell'album, soprattutto perché nel titolo "Hollywood Rose: The Roots of Guns N' Roses" appariva il nome del gruppo. Nell'aprile 2005 , la corte sentenziò a favore della Cleopatra e contro Rose, Slash e McKagan.
