Through mythological and literary-inspired works such as Pity, Blake would exert an immense influence on the course of post-Romantic art, including on the Pre-Raphaelites, who often drew on literary and Shakespearean themes, as in John Everett Millais's Ophelia (1851) and John William Waterhouse's Miranda (1916).
Comparison to contemporary references to Blake’s palette is fair; Blake may well have used all the colors mentioned by Gilchrist, but not all of them happen to be represented in the works analysed. Given the large variety of red lakes that were used in the manufacture of pigments in Blake’s time, it is encouraging to have been able to identify madder lake more or less specifically.

However, he was older when the movement first began which leads us to surmise that he may, indeed, have been an inspiration for and therefore a founder of the movement.
