Controversial from the start of its release, its originality, its subject, narrative style and troubled action raised intrigue.

Until the new vicarage was built c. 1850 incumbents of Pampisford were rarely resident; in 1836 the vicar lived in Devon, and the parish was served by a curate who was also responsible for Stapleford.
