Scottish theologian Thomas Forsyth Torrance (1913–2007) was born of missionary parents in Chengdu, West China in 1913. Because of growing hostility towards missionaries in China, Torrance returned to Scotland in 1927 and eventually attended the University of Edinburgh to study classics and philosophy.

He was first sent there by the China Inland Mission (CIM), and later by The American Bible Society. He married Annie Elizabeth Sharp (1883–1980) of the CIM in 1911.
