They eventually decided to carry on as a duo with Lucas handling bass guitar frequencies after having a high school friend, Tobey Flescher, modify his guitar with an added bass pickup and second output. Local H played their first show as a true duo on September 3, 1993.

APRIL 20 1990. Local H's first show at the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater. It's for Earth Day, which was a big deal this year. At this point, the band is a 4-piece: Joe Daniels on drums, Matt Garcia on Bass, John Sparkman on guitar, and Scott on vocals and guitar. Songs include Pop Top and Oil And Water.
Having trouble finding a bass player and eager to start playing shows, with the help of friend and guitar tech Tobey Flescher, Lucas devised a combination guitar and bass, with a bass pickup tracking the two low strings and running their signal to a separate bass amp.
