John Trudell (February 15, 1946 – December 8, 2015) was a Native American author, poet, actor, musician, and political activist. He was the spokesperson for the Indians of All Tribes ' takeover of Alcatraz beginning in 1969, broadcasting as Radio Free Alcatraz .

He never studied poetry in school. He took that road primarily through a series of detours, and his poetic and political sensibilities were forged by the remarkable, and some horrifying circumstances of his life. John Trudell was born on February 15, 1946 in Omaha, Nebraska, and grew up on and around the nearby Santee Sioux reservation.
There is powerful truth in the music Trudell and his collaborators made. On the captivating “Beauty in a Fade,” Trudell, Davis, and Quiltman blended poetry, tribal drumming and singing, and weeping bottleneck slide guitar into a song and sound unlike anything heard before or since.
