27 set 2018 · We are here in memory of Trygve Lie, thefirst UN Secretary General. It was during hismandate that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was drafted and adopted, 70 years ago. This great document, with its magnificent language, proclaims that "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights."
Starting his career in local politics and later becoming Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs in the Norwegian government, Trygve Lie assumed the position as first UN Secretary General in 1946. Praised for his pragmatism, many doubted whether he possessed the necessary leadership skills to "transform the UN from a mere Council of Ambassadors, into something resembling a world government."

LIE, Trygve. Uomo politico norvegese, nato a Oslo il 16 luglio 1896. Figlio di un carpentiere, membro del partito laburista, dopo essersi laureato in legge all'università di Oslo, divenne segretario generale del suo partito. Nel 1935 fu nominato ministro della Giustizia nel gabinetto Nygaardsvold e, quattro anni più tardi, ministro del Commercio.
