Prior to the release of the EP, Adam Young revealed the artwork for the EP's lead single, Beautiful Times, through his Instagram account in a series of images. Young later stated that he intended to release a series of EPs rather than a single album, and the EP's release was announced on June 5th.
Pre-orders went live on iTunes ten days prior to the EP's release, and the last track from the EP, "Wolf Bite", was released a few days prior to the full EP.
"Beautiful Times" was the EP's lead and only single, released on April 8th, 2014 after a series of teaser images.. It featured violinist Lindsey Stirling.
Ultraviolet was met with positive reviews, getting a 4/5 star rating from Jesus Freak Hideout.. Other notable reviews mention the departure from the "typical Owl City sound" and praised the album's lone single.
Commercially, Ultraviolet peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 chart, with its lone single peaking at No. 91 on the Japan Hot 100 chart.
