  4. The film Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives (HBO) explores and celebrates what it calls the "unique historical record" created by the oral histories of the ex-slaves. First aired in February, 2003, in time to commemorate Black History Month, the richly layered film styles itself along the lines of traditional documentary.

  5. Like Lester's book, "Unchained Memories" relies heavily on the Federal Writers Project of the late 1930's when dozens of interviewers sought to collect the stories of thousands of ex-slaves. What this 75-minute documentary does is recreate those interviews with actors reciting word for word from those personal slave narratives.

  6. Much of the time they were acting out the accounts, you see various photos of the day as well as video recreated for this film. The overall effect is extraordinary--and very moving. In particular, the discussion of the sexual assaults on slave women and beatings are hard to hear but very important to understanding the day.
