Initialement établi au sein des deux escadrons de transformation opérationnelle [A 6] VF-124 (F-8 Crusader) et VF-121 (F-4 Phantom II) basés à Miramar (Californie), Topgun se développe finalement surtout au sein de l'escadron VF-121 et devient une école autonome en 1972 sous le nom de Navy Fighter Weapons School (École des armes de la chasse de la marine).

We chose to dedicate a large section of this issue to celebrate the creation of the Navy Fighter Weapons School in 1969 and its successes over the past half century. But this is not a glorification of the Hollywood version of TOPGUN; rather it is an opportunity for current and former TOPGUN staff members to tell a story of innovation and overcoming challenges through hard work and dedication.

In this program, the US Navy trains the very best pilots in flying and tactical skills.
