The University of Texas tower shooting was an act of mass murder which occurred on August 1, 1966, at the University of Texas at Austin. The perpetrator, 25-year-old Marine veteran Charles Whitman , indiscriminately fired at members of the public both within the Main Building tower and from the tower's observation deck.
The Graduate School at The University of Texas at Austin was established in 1910. The school offers advanced degrees in nearly 100 fields of study and has more than 12,000 students. According to the school's website, " [The Graduate School] awards the second highest number of doctoral degrees in the United States." [1]
