NIDA is founded as the first professional theatre training school in Australia, being originally established in the grounds of the University of New South Wales with the support of then Vice-Chancellor (later Sir) Philip Baxter. 1959. Robert Quentin, later Professor of Drama at UNSW, is appointed the inaugural Director.

Founded in 1958, many of Australia's leading actors and directors trained at NIDA, including Cate Blanchett, Sarah Snook, Mel Gibson, Judy Davis and Baz Luhrmann.
