Both the novel and the film make an explicit connection with the historical Vlad the Impaler.

In this case, however, not just any vampire. “A ballerina vampire”, as Sammy (Kathryn Newton) pointed out in the film. The film’s biggest strength is, without a doubt, the sublime performances from the cast.
