Vesto Melvin Slipher ( / ˈslaɪfər /; November 11, 1875 – November 8, 1969) was an American astronomer who performed the first measurements of radial velocities for galaxies. He was the first to discover that distant galaxies are redshifted, thus providing the first empirical basis for the expansion of the universe.

Earl Carl Slipher (Mulberry, 25 marzo 1883 – Flagstaff, 7 agosto 1964) è stato un astronomo e politico statunitense. Fratello del più noto astronomo Vesto Slipher , fu eletto alla Camera dei rappresentanti (nel biennio 1927-1928) e poi per due mandati al Senato (nei bienni 1929-1930 e 1933-1934) dell' Arizona , essendosi candidato tra i democratici .
Slipher discovered and measured the rotations of the spirals. He also made extensive studies of the spectra of the night sky and the aurorae. As director he organized and supervised the successful search for a ninth planet .
Abstract. This article looks at Vesto Slipher’s work on nebular spectroscopy between 1912 and 1922 as well as related research by other astronomers of the period, and it examines the dissemination of their results more widely.
