  2. Marion Margaret Violet Manners, Duchess of Rutland (née Lindsay; 7 March 1856 – 22 December 1937) was a British artist and noblewoman. A granddaughter of the 24th Earl of Crawford, she married Henry Manners in 1882.

A granddaughter of the 24th Earl of Crawford, she married Henry Manners in 1882. She was styled the Marchioness of Granby from 1888 to 1906, when Manners succeeded as Duke of Rutland.

  6. George Frederic Watts’s portrait of Violet Lindsay is a highly significant painting both in terms of its artist and its subject. Watts was one of the most celebrated British artists of the Victorian age, famous for his range of subjects across social realism and portraiture.

  7. Violet Lindsay sat for the portrait around 1879, aged about 23. In 1882, she married Henry Manners, later Marquis of Granby and Duke of Rutland. She was a member of the intellectual circle known as the Souls, and an artist in her own right.
