Born at Knole Park, a 365-room ancestral home, her writing career was launched with the publication of Poems of East and West (1917). She’s known for her private life and as a master gardener perhaps as much as her literature.

Vita Sackville-West werd geboren in Knole House in Kent. Haar eerste liefde was voor dit huis, omdat zij zich de enige erfgename voelde, wat ze in wezen ook was. Maar omdat ze een vrouw was kon ze het niet erven, wat haar leven sterk beïnvloedde. Vita was de dochter van Lord Lionel Edward Sackville en Lady Victoria Sackville, née Sackville-West.
Sackville-West’s son Nigel Nicolson wrote the biography Portrait of a Marriage: Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson (1973). A founding member of the National Trust’s garden committee, Sackville-West wrote a weekly gardening column for The Observer and was awarded a Veitch Memorial Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society.
