Witi Tame Ihimaera-Smiler DCNZM QSM (/ ˈ w ɪ t i ɪ h i ˈ m aɪ r ə /; born 7 February 1944) is a New Zealand author. Raised in the small town of Waituhi, he decided to become a writer as a teenager after being convinced that Māori people were ignored or mischaracterised in literature.
Witi Ihimaera, Maori author whose novels and short stories explore the clash between Maori and Pakeha (white, European-derived) cultural values in his native New Zealand. His works included Tangi, Whanau, The Matriarch, The Dream Swimmer, The Whale Rider, Nights in the Gardens of Spain, and Sky Dancer.
