It’s important to note that neither Alsace nor Lorraine asked to join the German Empire, nor were they consulted. And their being “German” had nothing to do with it either. They were taken because of a combination of natural resources and fortifications, particularly Metz , which was enlarged and strengthened into the largest fortification in the world.
