Anhalt-Zerbst was a principality of the Holy Roman Empire ruled by the House of Ascania, with its residence at Zerbst in present-day Saxony-Anhalt. It emerged as a subdivision of the Principality of Anhalt from 1252 until 1396, when it was divided into the principalities of Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Köthen.

15 mag 2020 · The woman who would become Catherine the Great was born Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst on April 21, 1729 (Julian Calendar) in Stettin, Prussia (now Szczecin, Poland).
Alla morte di Enrico nel 1252, i suoi tre figli divisero il margraviato e fondarono rispettivamente le linee di Anhalt-Aschersleben, Anhalt-Bernburg e Anhalt-Zerbst. La famiglia regnante ad Aschersleben si estinse nel 1315 , e questo distretto venne successivamente incorporato nel Principato vescovile di Halberstadt , dividendo il territorio di Anhalt-Bernburg in due sezioni separate.
Zerbst was once Anhalt’s largest and most important town. The mighty medieval city wall with its gates and towers, the former monastery complexes, the churches and historic buildings still bear witness to this today. A stone Roland, an early symbol of jurisdiction, has stood guard on the market square since 1445.
