Statue of a beautiful woman from ancient Egypt. The young woman chosen was Asenath, a high-born, aristocratic Egyptian woman, the daughter of Potiphera, a priest of On. ‘On’ was another name for Heliopolis, which was the religious centre of Ra, the god representing the sun. So Asenath was.
Asenath is mentioned in three verses in the Bible, all in the Book of Genesis. First appearing in Genesis 41:45, Asenath is said to have been given by the Pharaoh to Joseph as a wife. Here, she is referred to as the daughter of Potipherah, priest of On (Gk. Heliopolis).

27 lug 2022 · Daughter of the Egyptian priest Potiphera, Aseneth becomes the wife of Joseph and mother of Ephraim and Manasseh. She is an intriguing biblical figure. Although Aseneth appears only three times in the Bible, she left a lasting impression on later Jewish authors.
4 gen 2022 · Answer. In Genesis 41, we read that Joseph married the daughter of the priest of On. Verse 45 says, “Pharaoh . . . gave [Joseph] Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife.” The priest of On led the worship of the Egyptian sun god.

The Hitchcock Dictionary of Bible Names, however, says her name means peril, or misfortune. Through a series of God-ordained events, Joseph was elevated to the role of second only to the Pharaoh.
