Fulgencio Batista, soldier and political leader who twice ruled Cuba—first in 1933–44 with an efficient government and again in 1952–59 as a dictator, jailing his opponents, using terrorist methods, and making fortunes for himself and his associates. He was toppled by the rebel forces led by Fidel Castro.
