Both star Saoirse Ronan, and co-star Dame Julie Walters, received a selection of OSCAR, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations, well-deserved in both cases. This is really rather an unusual film, because despite being modern, and based on a fairly recent novel (from 2009) by celebrated Irish writer and academic Colm Tóibín, it feels very grounded in the period in which it is set ~ the mid 1950s.
