  2. The Cavendish Laboratory is the Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge, and is part of the School of Physical Sciences. The laboratory was opened in 1874 on the New Museums Site as a laboratory for experimental physics and is named after the British chemist and physicist Henry Cavendish .

  6. 28 feb 2023 · But the discovery, which was made at Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory 70 years ago, was only possible because of the work of a host of talented scientists, not least X-ray crystallographer Rosalind Franklin. Lawrence Bragg’s appointment as Cavendish Professor of Physics in 1938 – succeeding Ernest Rutherford – was also key.

The Cavendish is home to approximately 430 graduate students and admits students to six different programmes although the the majority are studying for a PhD in one of the 15 research groups .
