Si tratta di una stazione termale che acquisì una particolare importanza e una risonanza nazionale fin dalla scoperta delle sue acque nel 1716. I suoi abitanti sono chiamati cheltoniani. È famosa altresì per la sua architettura Regency, tanto da essere ritenuta la più completa città Regency dell'Inghilterra.

Cheltenham ha una lunga storia, che parte dai Romani e passa per il Medioevo inglese, tra guerre di successione reale e sedi di mercato. Ma è soltanto nel Settecento che diventa una meta turistica rinomata: merito della scoperta di una sorgente termale, da allora prende il nome di Cheltenham Spa.
