Donald Hall was a major American poet of his generation, known for his exploration of the longing for a more bucolic past and his surrealistic imagery. He wrote about nature, history, and the human condition with simple, direct language and won the Lenore Marshall/Nation Prize in 1988. He also edited and lectured on various forms of writing and was the 14th US poet laureate in 2006.
