Ellen Burstyn is an American actress of film, television and stage. She is known for her film performances in Peter Bogdanovich 's The Last Picture Show (1971), William Friedkin 's The Exorcist (1973), Martin Scorsese 's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), and Requiem for a Dream (2000).

She won praise and award nominations for her performances in the film versions of Same Time, Next Year (1978) and Resurrection (1980). In "Resurrection", she played a woman with the power to heal. A succession of TV movies resulting in two Emmy nominations kept her going as did the series The Ellen Burstyn Show (1986) .

Adjusted for inflation, the film is the ninth highest-grossing film of all time in the U.S. and Canada and the top-grossing R-rated film of all time. It won two Academy Awards – Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound Mixing, and earned Burstyn her first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
