Ernest II (German: Ernst August Karl Johann Leopold Alexander Eduard; 21 June 1818 – 22 August 1893) was Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha from 29 January 1844 to his death in 1893. He was born in Coburg to Ernest III, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld , and Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg .

Biographie. E. erhielt seine Ausbildung bei seinem Onkel Leopold in Brüssel, auf der Universität Bonn und im Garde-Reiterregiment in Dresden. 25jährig folgte er seinem Vater in der Regierung in den nur in Personalunion verbundenen Herzogtümern Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha. Ernest (24 March 1441 – 26 August 1486), known as Ernst in German, was Elector of Saxony from 1464 to 1486. Ernst was the founder and progenitor of the Ernestine line of Saxon princes.

Ernst Heinrich was the youngest son of the last King of Saxony, Frederick Augustus III, and his wife Archduchess Luise of Austria, Princess of Tuscany.
