    After the Meiji Restoration of 1868 Gakushuin became the "The Peers' School", under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Imperial Household. The school has had a long and distinguished history, and many of its graduates have achieved positions of prominence in politics and academia, as well as in a variety of cultural and artistic fields.

  3. Gakushūin University (学習院大学, Gakushūin Daigaku) is a private university in Mejiro, Toshima, Tokyo. It was re-established after World War II as tertiary component of the Gakushūin School Corporation as privatized successor to the original Gakushūin University (or "Peers School") was established during the Meiji period to educate the children of the Japanese nobility .
