1 giorno fa · On 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Following a month of war, Poland was defeated. A period of inaction, called the Phoney War, then followed between the Allies and Germany. On 10 May 1940, this inactivity ended as Germany began Fall Gelb (Case Yellow) against France and the neutral nations of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

The British Expeditionary Force in France, cut off from the south of the country, was obliged to withdraw 340,000 men in the Dunkirk Evacuation of May-June. Paris was occupied on 14 June.
