Interestingly, and despite Siena’s side in the national conflict, Martini found much patronage while the Papal Court was in Avignon, which was technically Guelph-controlled.   6. 5 giorni fa · Henry VII is no longer a unifying figure in Italy, just simply the leader of the Ghibelline faction. And as such he has to tackle the Guelphs led by the commune of Florence and king Robert of Naples.

  7. 4 giorni fa · No Italian commune was simply pro-papal or pro-imperial, within their walls the different factions also competed for power. At times, one of them would gain the upper hand and would thus define the city as either Guelph or Ghibelline.
