It is named after the 150-acre (60-hectare) estate owned by Sir Robert Gordon in the 17th century; the school now uses this estate as its campus. It is located in Duffus to the north-west of Elgin. Gordonstoun was founded in 1934 by German educationalist Dr Kurt Hahn. Hahn was born in 1886 in Berlin to Jewish parents. As a young man he attended the universities of Heidelberg, Gottingen and Oxford and, after the First World War, he founded Salem School in Southern Germany with the former German Chancellor, Prince Max of Baden.

Kurt Matthias Robert Martin Hahn CBE [1] (5 June 1886 – 14 December 1974) was a German educator. He was decisive in founding Stiftung Louisenlund, Schule Schloss Salem, Gordonstoun, Outward Bound, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, and the first of the United World Colleges, Atlantic College .
