Grace Paley, née Goodside (December 11, 1922 – August 22, 2007) was an American short story author, poet, teacher, and political activist. Paley wrote three critically acclaimed collections of short stories, which were compiled in the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist The Collected Stories in 1994.

Grace Paley (born Dec. 11, 1922, New York, N.Y., U.S.—died Aug. 22, 2007, Thetford Hill, Vt.) American short-story writer and poet known for her realistic seriocomic portrayals of working-class New Yorkers and for her political activism. Paley’s first languages were Russian and Yiddish.

The daughter of Russian immigrants who arrived in New York around the turn of the century, Paley was raised in the Bronx. At home, her parents spoke Russian and Yiddish, and Paley grew up within two cultures, influenced by the old world as well as the new.

That activity is significant as an indication of her engagement in women’s issues, as well as her concern with Israel.

Her desire to remain outside the literary world was abetted by her interest in the growing peace movement.
