I'd like to add Henry the Lion, the duke of Bavaria and Saxony and brother-in-law of Richard the Lionheart. He was basically the most powerful noble in the HRE, until he had a falling out with Barbarossa and was stripped of his titles in 1180. 1178 is really a great starting date, as some of the best known medieval figures are around at this time
